International WELL Building Institute
The WELL Building Standard™ from the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI)
version 2 (WELL v2™) is a way for buildings and organizations to deliver more thoughtful and intentional spaces that enhance human health and well-being.
Four certification levels—Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum—can be achieved by projects pursuing WELL Certification. Points are earned based on performance results for various policy, design, and operational strategies.
A surge of legislation, development of standards and consumer awareness has increased the need for companies to demonstrate innovation in design, transparency and reporting for their products and packaging. Intertek’s team of sustainability experts support companies as they navigate issues of compliance, efficiency and management in their sustainability efforts.
The latest scientific research-supported WELL v2 initiatives attempt to improve human health through design interventions, operational protocols, and policies, as well as to promote a culture of health and well-being.
Built on the principles of the original WELL Building Standard (WELL v1), WELL v2 draws on the knowledge of a large international community of WELL users, practitioners, public health experts, and building scientists.
In 2020, IWBI established their Governance Council, which is made up of key worldwide thought leaders, medical experts, public health specialists, and corporate executives.
The IWBI Governance Council is tasked with a dual purpose to uphold the integrity of the WELL Building Standard development process and accelerate market transformation at a global scale.
WELL Certification and the WELL AP credentialing program are administered by a third party through IWBI's collaboration with Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), which also administers LEED certification, the global green building program, and the LEED professional credentialing program.
The Governance Council's first objective was to vote to validate that each WELL feature adhered to the following four principles and that WELL v2 fulfilled stated best practices for standard development:
