The Can Sofa from HAY has been reimagined in a new range of fabrics and frame finishes for 2019. Can is the most flat-packed of all Hay sofas, coming in five individual boxes and guaranteed to pass into the narrowest corridors or up the windiest staircases. You can have a beautiful and comfortable sofa in any room with Can. There are also 2-seater and 3-seater sofas within the Can family.
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are attempting to go beyond the development of a realistic, elegant, and comfortable design with the Can sofa. The goal is to reimagine the sofa as something easy, comfortable, and approachable, rather than something inherently complicated. The sofa is disassembled into individual parts and assembled at home using three basic components: frame, cover, and cushions.
Steel tube legs and crossbars are screwed and spring-clipped together to support a bent sheet metal bench. During the assembly process, the canvas is sewn to the steel frame and tightened and held in place by plastic profiles and a cotton strap. Inside the steel frame are cushions with anti-slip padding on the backside of the bench.
