The furniture sustainability standard is known as ANSI/BIFMAe3, was first released in 2008 and is still the gold standard for evaluatingthe effects that furniture products have on the environment, human health andwellness, and societal issues.

This voluntary standard aims to establish performance
standards that take into account social and environmental concerns at every
stage of the supply chain in order to provide quantifiable market-based
definitions of increasingly more sustainable furniture.

It focuses on general product-based characteristics such as;
materials, energy use, consequences on ecosystems, human health, and social
responsibility.

The standard was created as an open alternative for proprietaryprotocols and to support multiple levels of achievement.

The ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard was
developed by a group of stakeholders using a consensus process.
